About the Project

"Blackmark – The stars have scars" is a documentary project that explores racially-motivated incidents in the lives of high-profile, professional Black athletes. The pilot episode features 14 high-profile athletes and focuses on the story of 14-year NBA veteran Matt Barnes, who was a victim of a heinous hate crime as a senior at Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, California. Technology served as a cornerstone in conceptualizing the entire BLACK MARK project. For the pilot episode, the production utilized cutting-edge advancements in Unreal Engine technology, combined with a digital volume and parallax camera techniques, to craft entirely new cinematic environments. These tools allowed the team to seamlessly integrate the hero's journey into a visually immersive narrative. In the pilot, the protagonist not only curates his life in real-time within a digitally-designed darkroom but also adopts an omniscient perspective, reflecting on his past as he arrives in the surreal world of "Sactopia".
