The VR Recycling Simulation for Schools was developed in partnership with SALT to teach students about proper waste sorting and recycling practices. The immersive experience places students in a virtual recycling facility where they must correctly identify and sort various materials into the appropriate waste streams.
Designed for elementary and middle school students, the simulation makes environmental education engaging and interactive. Students learn about different material types, contamination issues, and the environmental impact of proper recycling through hands-on virtual activities.
Students showed significant improvements in their understanding of recycling categories and proper waste sorting after completing the VR experience. Teachers reported that the immersive format was far more effective at engaging students than traditional classroom instruction on environmental topics, with students retaining information better in subsequent assessments.
The VR simulation transforms environmental education from a passive lecture into an active, memorable experience. Schools can deploy the standalone headset-based system without additional infrastructure, making it accessible for classrooms of all sizes. The program supports curriculum goals for environmental science and sustainability education.
