About the Project

Designed for Saskatchewan Polytechnic's nursing program, the suture eLearning module provided students with a virtual environment to learn and practice techniques in suturing. The 15-minute virtual reality training module focuses on teaching nursing students essential techniques and best practices for suturing wounds, a critical skill in medical care (Metaverse911). The program features a detailed 3D model of a wound where students can practice making precise sutures while receiving real-time feedback on their technique (Metaverse911). Students practice their suturing techniques in a virtual environment that can be repeated as needed for better long-term retention of skills.

Outcomes

The project was originally designed as a desktop PC eLearning module and was also made WebGL compatible to allow for a wide range of users and devices. The integration of VR technology has led to increased retention rates, with studies showing improvements of up to 80% compared to traditional learning methods (Metaverse911). The pilot project's success led to its expansion across multiple Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses, including Regina, Prince Albert, and Saskatoon (Saskatchewan Polytechnic).

Benefits

One of the greatest benefits to the client was that it gave the nursing student the opportunity to assume the role of an accredited nurse and perform a procedure that they wouldn't normally get to do until they were in a clinical setting. The VR training provides a safe, controlled, and psychologically secure environment where students can make mistakes and learn from them without risk to actual patients (Education News Canada, Saskatchewan Polytechnic). It also improves student confidence, engagement, and motivation, leading to better academic outcomes (Saskatchewan Polytechnic).
