About this simulation

This immersive VR training simulation provides a hands-on learning experience for participants preparing to administer a blood glucose test and an insulin injection. Using realistic equipment that mirrors real-world practice, learners develop confidence, accuracy, and safety in the procedures while receiving guidance from a virtual narrator, who offers step-by-step instructions throughout the experience.

Before beginning the simulation, participants can complete an interactive tutorial designed to introduce them to VR controls and essential interactions. This tutorial allows users to practice moving, grabbing, and using equipment in a safe environment. Once comfortable, participants proceed to the full simulation, where they perform each step of the procedure with a strong emphasis on infection prevention, hygiene, proper documentation, and biohazard disposal.

What you'll experience

  1. Blood Glucose Test

Participants complete the full workflow for a blood glucose test. They begin by gathering and preparing supplies, then wash their hands with warm water and follow proper hand hygiene before putting on gloves. Learners prepare the lancing device with a new lancet, verify that the glucose meter code matches the code on the test strip container, and insert the test strip into the meter.

They then clean the fingertip with an alcohol wipe, adjust the lancing depth, perform the finger prick, and apply the test strip to the blood drop. Participants record whether the reading is before or after a meal, document the result, and clean the puncture site. Used lancets and test strips are safely disposed of in a sharps container, and equipment and the work surface are disinfected before gloves are removed and a final hand wash is completed.

  2. Insulin Injection

Participants review the documentation to confirm the type of insulin, the dose, and the scheduled time. They retrieve the insulin pen from the fridge, allow it to warm to room temperature, complete hand hygiene, and put on the appropriate PPE. Learners inspect the insulin, mix it by gently rolling and rocking the pen 20 times, attach a new needle, prime the pen, and set the correct dose.

The participant asks the individual their preferred injection site, assesses and cleans the area with an alcohol wipe, pinches the skin, and inserts the needle at a 90-degree angle. After delivering the dose, they wait 10 seconds before withdrawing the needle, dispose of the used needle in a sharps container, clean and disinfect the equipment and surface, remove gloves, perform hand hygiene, and document the administration.
