About this simulation
In this immersive VR training simulation, participants take on the role of a support worker, learning how to foster independence, encourage meaningful choice, and build positive relationships within the community for people who require support. Through realistic, speech-based scenarios, participants practice empathetic communication and person-centred decision-making while receiving guidance and feedback from a virtual narrator.
Participants begin by selecting a support worker character, which determines the voice used throughout the simulation. They then review information about the individuals they will be supporting, complete a confirmation phone call, and gather the supplies needed for the day. From there, they navigate interactive scenarios that reinforce respectful communication, appropriate support strategies, and best practices.
What you'll experience
-
Supporting Jen
In this scenario, participants accompany Jen, a wheelchair user, to her fitness class. When Jen decides she does not want to enter, the user must choose from several dialogue options to determine the most appropriate response. The simulation emphasizes respecting Jen's autonomy, using supportive communication, and encouraging informed decision-making rather than directing her actions.
As the scenario progresses, participants practice responding to changing situations, supporting social interactions, and respecting Jen's choice if she no longer wishes to participate in the activity or needs a break.

Supporting Bryan
Participants accompany Bryan to a baseball game, supporting him through activities such as purchasing tickets, ordering food, finding their seats, and interacting with other fans. Throughout the outing, users select dialogue options that encourage Bryan's independence while providing appropriate support.
If an incorrect response is chosen, the virtual narrator explains why it is not the best approach and guides the participant toward a more appropriate, person-centred response, reinforcing effective communication and support strategies.
